The market for AI visibility tools is growing fast and the quality varies enormously. Some tools repackage existing SEO data with an "AI" label. Others are genuinely built for the problem. Knowing the difference before you commit budget and workflow time matters.

This checklist covers the nine criteria that separate tools worth using from tools worth ignoring. Run any candidate tool through these before making a decision.

1. Does It Track Citations Directly on Perplexity?

This sounds obvious, but many tools claiming to cover "AI SEO" are actually tracking Google AI Overviews, not Perplexity. These are completely different platforms with different retrieval mechanisms and different citation patterns.

A credible Perplexity SEO tool queries Perplexity directly, captures the generated answer, and parses whether your domain appears in the cited sources. If the tool can't explain exactly how it retrieves Perplexity data, assume it doesn't.

Red flag: Tools that say they "support AI search" but list Google AI Overviews as their primary integration.

2. Does It Cover Multiple AI Platforms?

Perplexity is important, but it's one of several AI answer engines your prospects are using. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each have distinct user bases and different retrieval behaviours. A prospect might use Perplexity for initial research and ChatGPT to compare products.

If a tool only tracks one platform, you're getting an incomplete picture. The best tools give you citation tracking across all major platforms in a single dashboard, so you can see where you're winning and where you're invisible.

What to look for: Coverage of at least Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Query results should be differentiated by platform, not blended.

3. Can You Track Competitors?

Knowing you're not cited is useful. Knowing which competitor is being cited instead - and in what context - is actionable.

Good tools let you add competitor domains to your tracking setup. For any query where you're not appearing, you should be able to see who is, and what language the AI model used when referencing them.

Red flag: Tools that only report on your own domain with no competitive visibility.

4. How Frequently Does It Run Queries?

AI citation patterns change. A competitor publishes a better page. Perplexity updates its retrieval logic. A news event shifts which sources the model favours. If your tool only checks visibility once a week, you're always looking at stale data.

Daily or near-real-time tracking is the standard for serious AI visibility monitoring. Check the tool's query frequency and whether you can increase it for high-priority keywords.

What to look for: At least daily query execution for your tracked keyword set. Configurable refresh rates for priority terms.

5. Does It Provide Historical Trend Data?

A single snapshot of your citation status is interesting. A trend line is actionable. You need to see how your visibility changes over time - especially after content updates, link building campaigns, or structural changes to your pages.

Without history, you're flying blind on whether your optimisation efforts are working.

What to look for: At minimum, 90 days of citation history. Charts that show citation rate trends per keyword and per platform.

6. How Does It Handle Keyword Organisation?

Tracking 5 keywords is easy. Tracking 200 across multiple platforms, campaign groups, and content clusters is where organisation becomes critical.

Look for tools that let you group keywords by topic cluster, funnel stage, or product line. You should be able to filter and compare performance across these groups - not just look at one keyword at a time.

Red flag: Tools with flat keyword lists and no organisation or tagging capability.

7. Does It Explain WHY You're Being Cited (or Not)?

Citation tracking answers "are we there?" The more valuable question is "why not?" - and what to fix.

Better tools go beyond binary cited/not cited and show you:

  • What the AI said about your brand when it cited you
  • What the AI said about competitors it cited instead
  • Whether your content was retrieved but not surfaced in the final answer

This diagnostic layer is what separates tools that generate reports from tools that drive improvement. See How AI Models Choose Sources for more context on what drives citation decisions.

What to look for: Answer capture alongside citation tracking. Contextual analysis of how your brand is framed.

8. Is There an Alert System?

Your Perplexity visibility can drop overnight if a competitor publishes a definitive piece of content or if your site has a crawlability issue. Manual checking doesn't catch this quickly enough.

Look for tools that send alerts when your citation rate drops significantly, when a new competitor appears in answers for your core keywords, or when your brand is mentioned in an unexpected context.

Red flag: Tools with no alerting capability, requiring you to log in and manually check for changes.

9. Does It Integrate with Your Existing Workflow?

The best tool is the one your team actually uses. Check whether the tool integrates with Slack (for alerts), exports to CSV (for reporting), or connects to a BI tool. If the data lives in a silo, it won't influence decisions.

Also consider onboarding friction. Tools that require complex setup or multiple API keys often get abandoned after the initial trial. Simpler setups with immediate value tend to stick.

What to look for: At minimum, CSV/spreadsheet export and Slack or email alerting. API access is a bonus for technical teams.
